Abstract: The dynamics of the transversal structure of the reflected light from stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is examined experimentally. The setup allows to observe the transversal structure of the backscattered pulses with a time resolution of 2 ns. Two different SBS-materials, SF$-6$/ and methanol with significant different phonon lifetimes, were investigated. The results show a rapid growth of the beam size at the onset of the SBS. Generally, a different behavior in the development of the transversal structure between transient and stationary SBS was observed. !18
