Numerical and experimental analyses of preforming (crushing) and expansion processes in tube hydroforming are presented. FEA predictions were compared with experimental data, available in the literature for aluminum alloy (AA5182). The results summarized here show good agreement between predictions and measurements. By keeping the desired expansion percentage (circumferential elongation) the same, but changing the die designs, the crushed tube geometry changes. By considering this geometrical variation, it is shown how crushed tube geometries can affect the successful production of tubular components by hydroforming.
