Two projects for the City of Columbus, Ohio have extensively evaluated the environmental and urban impacts on the project areas before a decision was made to utilize tunneling to construct large diameter sewers in these areas. The two projects to be discussed are the Upper Sci-oto West Interceptor Sewer and the Big Walnut Sanitary Trunk Sewer Extension. This paper will present the benefits which resulted from the use of a tunnel on the construction of the Upper Scioto West Interceptor Sewer and will also present the results of the evaluation of the alternatives for the Big Walnut Sewer Project.
