摘要

Underground space is being developed for a high energy physics experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, about 55 km (35 miles) west of Chicago, Illinois. The $70 million Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI) Project is funded by the U. S. Department of Energy and will house underground experimental facilities to investigate the physical properties of neutrinos. The project includes an interconnected series of tunnels and caverns, approximately 1300 m (4200 ft) in length, constructed primarily in bedrock. Although a traditional approach of design, bid, and construct is being followed, the development and design of the project included construc-tability workshops with underground contractors in the preliminary design phases, a value engineering study, preparation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report and the involvement of an underground advisory panel throughout the design. This approach was taken to better define the project and reduce overall project cost, while meeting the strict requirements to the project layout dictated by the neutrino experiment.
