The extension of the Big Walnut Sanitary Trunk Sewer in Columbus, Ohio has been designed for underground construction. The decision to design and construct the sewer extension using trenchless technology was made following numerous economical, engineering, environmental, and social evaluations. Several issues led to the need to evaluate tunneling methods for the construction of the extension. The project area includes the Hoover Reservoir, a major source of drinking water for the residents of Columbus. The project area also includes numerous park sites, a golf course and environmentally sensitive areas. The majority of residents in the project corridor rely on private well systems, which required careful evaluation during design. Topographical features of the extension area dictated that open-trench construction could not be completed without incorporating pump stations, aerial sewers, or inverted siphons. In addition to the issues specific to the project area, past experiences with similar sewer projects has caused the City and the Design Team to carefully evaluate impacts that the project may have on the public. This paper describes the extensive evaluations that were undertaken during the preliminary engineering phase of the project and how the evaluations were incorporated into the Detailed Design of the sewer extension.
