The Sigsbee Escarpment is a major regional geomorphologicalrnfeature of the Gulf of Mexico seafloor, with evidence ofrnnumerous major slope failure events during the relativelyrnrecent geological past. The Mad Dog and Atlantis field areasrnlie beneath the Sigsbee Escarpment, making the effectivernsiting of facilities to efficiently develop the fields close to orrnon the escarpment itself of great strategic importance.rnThis paper describes the key processes and skills involved inrnthe analysis of geohazards related to the Sigsbee Escarpment,rnleading to the choice of safe facility locations, and emphasizesrnthe need for cross-disciplinary work to deliver the requiredrnresults. The paper also describes the practical challenges ofrnconducting studies and fieldwork in such a complexrngeological setting - especially within the context of a fastpacedrnfield development schedule.rnThe proper assessment of geohazards takes considerablernplanning. The many types of field data collection activitiesrnhave to be planned and managed in parallel; bearing in mindrnthat the results of one dataset will have a direct impact on thernneeded acquisition of other data types. Large volumes of highresolutionrndata must be interpreted and shared betweenrnvarious discipline teams; itself providing logistical problems.rnDuring the projects described, although time and humanrnresources were limited due to the fast project pace qualityrnanswers were provided in a timely fashion to the projects’rnfacility teams.
