This paper describes the design and installation of the twin 12-rninch flowlines for the Canyon Express project. In addition tornthe world record-breaking water depth of 7,280 ft (2,220 m) inrnMississippi Canyon block 348, several challenges were metrnand overcome by the design and installation team. Some ofrnthese challenges were: the fast track nature of the project; tenrnin-line sleds and two end-of-line sleds to be installed withinrntight tolerance areas on the seafloor; in the King’s Peak fieldrnthree sleds to be in the flowline catenary simultaneously withrntwo of these 3,200 feet apart landing in a curve in 6,400-footrnwater depth; in the Aconcagua field two sleds to be in therncatenary 3,700 feet apart in 7,100-foot water depth.rnThe Canyon Express project management team was leadrnby TotalFinaElf and included engineers in lead positions fromrnthe operating partners (BP and Marathon Oil). INTECrnEngineering provided support from conceptual to detailedrndesign in all aspects of the project, except drilling. Saipemrnwas the flowline sled detail designer, fabricator, andrninstallation contractor. The vessel used for the deepwaterrnportion of the work was the SaiBOS Field Development Shiprn(FDS). Shallow water flowline installation work wasrnperformed with EMC’s Castoro 10.rnThis paper describes several aspects of the CanyonrnExpress project which includes a number of issues pertinent torndeepwater flowline work: field development concept leadingrnto selection of the daisy chain concept, flowline mechanicalrndesign, installation scope of work and bid strategy, the King’srnPeak multiple sled installation challenge, multi-phase flowrnmeter and jumper design, installation procedures, andrnexecution of the offshore work.rnSaipem completed installation of the Canyon Expressrnflowlines in the summer of 2002. The success of thisrnendeavor is due in large part to the collaborative and teamrnphilosophy adopted by TotalFinaElf, as well as carefulrnplanning and attention to detail of the subsea components andrnequipment involved.
