Abstract: A new technique of Focused Ion Beam (FIB) microscopy-nanomachining is proposed for life sciences. Itsperformances are compared with those of currentlyavailable ultramicroscopy apparatuses. Ultra-highresolution tridimensional tomography can be performedon whole cells without preparation. This can beachieved by sequentially etching layers of material andsubsequently viewing the result of the operation undera different perspective. Very fast imaging times(minutes) allow quasi real time microscopy. Thecomplementary technique of nano-biology can beperformed on the same apparatus. The use of the ionbeam allows to imaging both the surface and the innerpart of the sample along any desired plane that can bechosen while the observation is on. !8
