Organizations have increased the use of teams in recentrnyears and as such, interest in the teaming process hasrngained momentum. This paper will report on thernassessment of observational data from four seniorrnmechanical design teams working as IntegratedrnProduct Teams (IPTs) with respect to the eight teamingrnprinciples of Larson and LaFasto (1989). Analysis ofrnthis data allowed the observers to rank the IPTs withrnrespect to team progress and predict which IPT wouldrnwin the competition based solely on positive teamingrnattributes. By comparison, a separate panel ofrnaerospace experts, acting as customers for the classrnproject, determined the winning proposal, based on therntechnical merits of the team design proposals. Thernobservers selected IPT A as the winner based on thernobservational data. The independent panel selected IPTrnD as the winner of the design competition.rnRecommendations for study improvements andrnapplication by engineering managers have been madernbased on the conclusions of the study.
