This paper describes the development of an approachrnfor assessing the effectiveness of design tools appliedrnwithin the new product development (NPD) process.rnBoth the quality of the process used to apply the designrntool and the quality of outputs generated by the designrntool are assessed. The paper describes therndevelopment and application of this assessmentrnapproach in an engineer-to-order (ETO) company.rnFuture work will include investigating the use of thernapproach for additional design tools and analyzing howrndesign tool effectiveness relates to overall productrnlaunch effectiveness.
