The wood processing industrial cluster at Kawerau with geothermal reserves, infrastructure and strategic location provides for the development of interesting industrial symbiosis opportunities. We present the results of a case study carried out to identify and quantify symbiotic benefits at this primary wood processing site. Identified opportunities involved a mix of primary wood processing and residue-based processes. Detailed techno-economic analysis of three selected options are shared along with optimum wood processing scenarios for maximising benefits for the industrial cluster. Significant savings could be accrued through the utilisation of geothermal heat and the sites waste treatment and disposal infrastructure. The study findings would help future decision making for co-locating or expansion of primary and secondary processing developments at Kawerau based on the extent of site benefits.
