Laser and LED sources are often used in optoelectronic measurement devices as probernbeam or for illumination.rnThe international laser safety standard IEC 60825-1 has been recently revised, both in termsrnof accessible emission levels for the classification of products, as well as in terms ofrnmeasurement distances which need to be used to determine emission levels.rnThis paper discusses the dependence of the limits on wavelength, pulse duration, repetitionrnrate and source size. As for large beam diameters, less than the total output power isrncompared to the limits, prescribed measurement apertures are just as important as thernpower limits for the classification of the product. Based on some examples it will be shownrnhow products can be assigned to safe product classes but still use an increased power level,rnwhich is often needed for measurement tasks.
