In 2009 Lufthansa started to introduce competency based training with the MPL scheme for ab-initio pilots. Since then, more than 1400 pilots have started their MPL Training at the Lufthansa Pilot School and ~1000 so far successfully finished their training as first officer on Airbus A320, Boeing B737, Embraer 190. Beside this, Lufthansa uses internal competencies to define the required crew performances for many years.The very good experiences we made with this type of training logically leads to the desire to introduce EBT in the recurrent training within Lufthansa, as EBT is based on competencies only. It is seen as a strong opportunity to improve training results both, for the individual pilot and the organisation - the goal is “less checking - more training”. To implement EBT in Lufthansa, a project team was nominated which first set up a time frame for the different steps. Those steps include communication to line pilots, trainer training and the introduction of assisting tools, e.g. a software tool for lesson-grading. Since not all legal requirements for a Baseline-EBT are defined now, Lufthansa starts to implement EBT as “Mixed Implementation” in mid-2018, but is prepared to upgrade to Baseline-EBT as soon as the regulator is ready.
