In the present investigation, the microstructural characterization of the AZ91 Mg-alloy produced by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and the evaluation of its hot compression behaviour has been carried out. Two SPS cycles were investigated; the first up to 400 °C and the second up to 450 °C. The specimens were characterized with respect to their microstructure, density, hardness, microhardness and phase composition. For the evaluation of the hot deformability, uniaxial compression tests for a 40% reduction in length were performed at different temperatures. It has been obtained that both SPS cycles produce samples with 99% of densification. In addition, the samples presented a different content in the embrittling Mg_17Al_12 phase, about 22.1% in the samples produced at 400cC and 7.1% in the others. For both types of sample, the results of the hot compression tests are quite promising, but the content of the embrittling phase has to be reduced and the sintering degree has to be increased, in order to improve the surface quality of specimens after hot compression.
