In between "pure" power quality solutions and traditional 15 min UPS backup, there is a growing need on the part of both power users and power producers for systems of less than 10 minutes of power backup. This paper provides an analysis of the critical requirements and a comparison of alternative energy storage options for providing short-duration support for UPS, power quality, and other applications, covering flywheels, supercapacitors, and existing and emerging battery technologies.
