This study focuses on the topic of using phased array ultrasonics to inspect structural welds per AWS Dl. ID 1.5. AWS does not break down the process that is used as the code cases do with the ASME Code. This study takes a look at the calibration, equipment, and acceptance.This study takes into account the type of instrument setup that should be used for inspecting to the AWS code. The setup is a big part of why better results have not been attained in the past, and this paper will show the downfall of not having the proper inspection settings.Currently companies are using whatever equipment they currently have to inspect to the AWS codes, however, just like with the conventional equipment there are certain parameters that need to be followed when selecting phased array equipment to be utilized. This paper addresses the specific equipment needed to correctly perform the inspection.AWS does not go into great detail on the steps that need to be taken prior to an inspection utilizing phased array. This study will take a look at what AWS has in their code and also discuss some personal recommendations that are believed to be important to address phased array inspection.
