A method has been developed to recycle casing soil for the cultivation of Agaricus bisporus. Normally, casing soil is discarded together with the rest of the spent mushroom compost (SMC). In The Netherlands only, more than 800.000 tons of SMC is produced per year. Special equipment has been designed, tested and built to separate the casing soil from the compost. Speed of operation and good separation were key factors during the development. The casing soil still contains pieces of mushrooms like stems. The separated casing soil is treated with steam to ensure pests and diseases are taken care for, mushroom pieces are crushed and a mixture of specific microbes is added to convert easily degradable components. In this way a large population of benign micro flora will develop. The treated casing soil can be mixed with fresh casing soil. Yields of mushrooms on casing soil mixed with recycled casing soil showed similar results compared to 100% fresh casing soil and a better quality. This technology drastically reduces the need for peat and offers growers the possibility to reuse their casing soil.
