摘要

The mushroom industry in Kenya is still at its infancy stage with great potential to grow. Currently both cultivated and indigenous mushrooms are consumed and marketed in the country. Information was collected nationwide to assess the production and marketing of these mushrooms and research ongoing to support the industry. The study used desktop reviews, Key informant interviews and visits to research institutions, large scale farms and Non Governmental Institutions (NGO's) supporting mushroom production and marketing. Factors considered included size and trend of production, types produced and products available, the marketing channels used, research institutions involved and the pertinent challenges facing the industry. The assessment revealed an Industry with a low but a steady growth in production with very little exports. Current production is pegged at 500 tons/year with a potential demand of 30 800 tons/year. The exports amount to 16 tons/year earning the country a mere KES 3. 9 million while imports have decreased to 81 tons/year worth KES. 10 million. Types are increasing with research intervention on indigenous species. Small-scale farmers are getting on board with Agaricus bisporous, an effort of some NGO's. The potential is enormous as substrates are cheap, abundant and easily available and industrial processing and export markets still untapped. However, challenges of inadequate supply of quality spawn, poor research and extension, failure to identify best practices and development of standards along the value chain are still weighing on the industry. There is need for improvement in production practices, enterprise development and marketing techniques including industrial processing such as canning for Agaricus which fuels calls for investors and intensive research and extension. Otherwise the industry has great opportunities for employment, income generation and food and nutrition security for Kenyans.
