Shield machine has been widely used due to its various advantages such as high automation, fast velocity, safety, and smaller impacts on surrounding environment. However, shield machine used in domestic market is mainly imported from foreign countries at very expensive prices due to its complex manufacturing technology. Manufacturing shield machine domestically with intelligent patent can largely reduce the costs. Thrust system is one of the key components. Calculation and selection of various components is based on the thrust force needed for the thrust system. This article uses earth pressure balance (EPB) shield machine as a model and analyzes the thrust force received by each component in a detailed manner. It proposes a detailed thrust force calculation method whose results, comparing with the actual construction data, have less error, therefore, it can provide theoretical foundation for choosing and designing hydraulic cylinders and shield machine shells.
