objective In order to understand freshmen's mental health and provide the basis of mental health education, freshmen who were in Hunan University of Science and Engineering was surveyed and analyzed. Methods Four hundred and twenty-eight Freshmen College students who enrolled in 2009 were surveyed with University Personality Inventory (UPI). Results the total peak of surveyed students are in 6 ~ 8 points, the highest point is 53, the lowest point is 0, the median is 5. the students of the first degree who have serious psychological problems are 79, occupying 18.46%, the students of the second degree who have some psychological problems and need to be paid attention are 83, occupying 19.39%, there are 266 students who are considered mental health, occupying 62.15%.It is not statistical significance for the difference between male students' and female students' mental health (X2=1.417,P=0.492); The screening rate of the first and second degree student who are from town is higher than that from country, but It is no statistical significance for the screening rate of the third degree between students from town and from country(X2=5.437, P=0.066). The screening rates of the first and second degree students who are only child are higher than students who are non only child, but it is no statistical significance for the difference of the UPI three degree screening rate between the only child and the non only child (X2=3.651, P=0.161);It is statistical significance for the difference of the screening rate of the third degree between caexpo freshmen and graduating freshmen (X2=6.417, P=0.040),but the detected numbers of the first degree students who are caexpo freshmen are significantly higher than that of graduating freshmen, the detected numbers of the second degree students who are graduating freshmen are significantly higher than that of caexpo freshmen (23.39/16.45,12.90/22.04. Conclusions the mental health statuses of most freshmen are good, but it should not be ignored that there are still many of freshmen who have psychological health problems.
