Demolition of construction work generates a significant amount of waste concrete. Most of waste concrete is disposed in landfill, which is costly and occupies vast expanses of land and also causes environmental problems. Currently, the utilization of waste concrete is limited to the utilization of recycled aggregates in non-structure filler and pavement base. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing waste concrete powder to synthesize geopolymeric binder. The obtained geopolymeric binder can be mixed with recycled aggregates to synthesize new geopolymeric concrete. Due to the high silicon and calcium content for the waste concrete powder, metakaolin is used to optimize the silicon, aluminium and calcium content. The unconfined compressive strengths (UCS) of the geopolymeric binders synthesized at different alkaline activator concentrations and metakaolin contents are evaluated and the optimal values of them are determined. The microstructure and phase compositions of the source materials and the synthesized geopolymeric binders are studied base on SEM/EDS and XRD analyses. The results show that the UCS of geopolymeric binder increases with the addition of metakaolin up to 80% content and then decreases. Therefore, adding proper content of metakaolin to waste concrete powder, the strength of geopolymeric binder can reach the required value.
