EXTRACTION OF HEAVY METALS BY PHOSPHATE AND OXALATE FROM A CONTAMINATED SOIL

Laboratory batch experiments were conducted to studyrnarsenic (As), lead (Pb) as well as, cadmium (Cd),cooperrn(Cu), and zinc (Zn) removal from arsenic lead miningrnwastes (MW) contaminated site using phosphate and /orrnoxalate acid EDTA solutions . Soils used in this studyrnwere Sultan silt loam soil (Aquandic Xerochrept). Thernresults indicate that phosphate and /or oxalate acid EDTArnsolutions were very significant in extracting As fromrnMW polluted soils. The percentage of As extracted rangedrnfrom 3.8 to 38.8% from the total amount in soil. Thernoxalate acid and EDTA extraction solution extract lessrnAs than phosphate solutions in generals. In overall, thernpercentages of As and Pb extracted increased withrnincreasing of KH_2PO_4 + EDTA and/or oxalate acid +rnEDTA. A higher amount of Pb was extracted with 10 mMrnof oxalate acid in EDTA solutions. Combination of EDTArnand oxalate acid extract the maximum amounts from bothrnAs and Pb. Compared to As and Pb, much smallerrnamounts from Cd, Cu and Zn were generally extracted,rnindicating that phosphate and oxalate are not efficient inrnextracting Cd, Cu and Zn from MW polluted soils.
