In the GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Cirrnculation Explorer) mission two types of techniques arernused for the recovery of the gravity field: gradiometry forrnthe medium to short wavelengths and high-low satellite-rnto-satellite tracking (hl-SST) for the long wavelength fearntures. For the latter, it is necessary to make use of GPSrnobservations due to the limited measurement bandwidthrnof the gradiometer. In this contribution we focus on thisrnpart. Currently, the processing facilities derive the long-rnwavelength features by using the energy conservation ap-rnproach. We propose to use the acceleration approach, inrnstead, as earlier studies for CHAMP showed that it of-rnfers a superior alternative. Theory suggest that the sornlution can be improved since gravity field information isrnavailable in all three directions whereas in case of the enrnergy balance the information is primarily alongtrack. Wernshow that for the low degrees such an improvement canrnbe achieved. However, the processing is still at an earlyrnstage and further improvements are expected using imrnproved filtering, better outlier detection and more reliablernerror information. The procedure aims at the optimal rerncovery of a GOCE-only solution which is one of the keyrnobjectives within the ESA’s Living Planet Programme.
