The mean sea surface (MSS) is a fundamental parameterrnin geodesy and physical oceanography and knowledgernabout the error on the MSS is fundamental for therninterpretation of GOCE geoid model for the study ofrnlarge scale ocean circulation.rnThe MSS is the sum of the geoid height G and therntemporal mean of the ocean mean dynamic topographyrn(MDT) like MSS = G + MDT, where the MDT is thernquantity bridging the geoid and the MSS and thernquantity constraining large scale ocean circulation.rnIn order to evaluate the accurate of satellite derivedrnocean currents from the difference between the MSSrnand the new and future GOCE geoids it is ofrnfundamental importance to know the error on the MSS.rnIn this presentation, preliminary results investigating thernvarious contributions to MSS model differences as wellrnas quantifying the various contributions to the total MSSrnerror are characterized and the error sources arernanalyzed with respect to magnitude and scale.
