@@ Financial conflicts of interest are increasingly recognized as a key source of public distrust in the reliability of safety data derived from studies funded by the chemical industry. While previous commentaries acknowledge that contract research organizations (CROs) are involved in the generation of chemical safety data, these discussions have downplayed the reality that CROs-in addition to universities-serve a critical function during pre- and post-market chemical testing, generating the vast majority of safety data used by regulatory authorities such as the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
