@@ Mammalian hazard characterization is an important component in the product life cycle of organic chemicals, starting from discovery to commercialization and to product stewardship. Significant resources and testing efforts will be needed to meet the regulatory evaluation and risk prioritization of large volume of chemicals. Some examples of the current global regulatory initiatives are the USEPA [HPV (High Production Volume Chemicals)], Canada [DSL (Domestic Substance List)] and EU [REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals)], etc. Under the REACH directive, the use of non-testing data for estimation and assessment of the hazards and risks of a chemical is acceptable as technical alternative.
