@@ Most chemical applications in orchards and ornamental nurseries are not target-oriented, resulting in significant pesticide losses and environmental contaminations. To avoid over-and under-application of chemicals, sprayers must be designed to apply the appropriate amount of pesticides based on the tree canopy characteristics such as tree height, width, volume, and foliage density. An experimental variable-rate air-assisted sprayer implemented with a highspeed laser scanning sensor was developed to control spray output of individual nozzles in real time. With high-speed laser scanner, real time data processing algorithm and a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal controller, each nozzle in the sprayer processed the variablerate delivery based on occurrence, height, width of target tree and its foliage density.
