With the increasing number of multilingual web pages onrnthe Internet, multilingual information retrieval has becomernan important research issue. While queries are the keyrnelement of information retrieval process, mixed-languagernqueries have not yet been adequately studied. This studyrninvestigates the search topics and user intents of Chinese-rnEnglish mixed language queries submitted to a Chinese webrnsearch engine, and develops a typology of English termsrnused in those mixed language queries. The preliminaryrnfindings show that the category of search topics andrndistribution of user intents differ from those of monolingualrnqueries reported in previous studies, suggesting a specificrnsearching behavior of Chinese-English mixed languagernqueries users. The findings of this study could providernuseful insights in understanding specific searching behaviorrnof Chinese-English mixed language queries users, andrninform the construction of controlled vocabularies andrncross-lingual query expansion.
