摘要

University students’ social media use for everyday liferninformation seeking (ELIS) opens up opportunities forrnseeking information from weak ties, but it may exacerbaternissues such as information overload. Currently, it is unclearrnwhether social media use affects the outcome of ELIS. Therncurrent study surveyed undergraduate and graduate studentsrnto test whether the frequent uses of (a) social networkingrnsites (SNS), (b) microblogs, (c) social question and answerrnsites (Social Q&A), and (d) Web search engines affect (a)rnlevel of satisfaction with the quality of ELIS results and (b)rnlevel of difficulty in ELIS. Gender and study level werernincluded as control variables. ANOVA tests of the 1,144rnresponses found that the frequent use of SNS, microblogs, rnand Web search engines each had significant effects onrnELIS satisfaction level. Frequent microblog use had arnsignificant effect on ELIS difficulty. Interestingly, therneffects of SNS, microblogs, and Web search engine usagernshowed a U-shaped relationship. The heavy-users as well asrnnon-users of social media experienced higher level ofrnsatisfaction and lower level of difficulties. It was thernoccasional users who were more troubled, as werernunderclassmen and master’s students. These user groupsrncould benefit from more social media information literacyrntraining. The current study shows that social media use doesrnmake a difference in ELIS. Future studies may further testrnthe influence of social media use on specific types of ELISrnproblems.
