During October 2010, the European ENVISAT satelliternconducted a successful Orbit Change Manoeuvrern(OCM) to lower its orbital altitude by 17 km. Prior tornthis OCM, an analysis was carried out to assess whetherrnthe resulting thruster plume would contaminaternsubsystems of the satellite including optical equipmentrnand solar panels. This involved using ComputationalrnFluid Dynamics (CFD) and a chemical equilibrium codernto evaluate the thruster nozzle exit conditions followedrnby a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) simulationrnof the plume flowfield. The resulting data werernevaluated in conjunction with measurements ofrnincoming UV signal to the SCIAMACHY instrument torngive a likely contamination level due to the upcomingrnOCM.rnThe calculations showed that the only possiblerncontamination issue would be on the mirrors of thernLimb and Nadir port of the SCIAMACHY instrumentrnand so the analysis and quantification of contaminationrnfocused on this. Supplemental data from UVrnmeasurements from SCIAMACHY reduced thernuncertainty to the point where the contamination levelrncould be roughly quantified and regarded as not critical.rnThis was verified after the OCM using further UVrnmeasurements.
