To meet the need of the development of high speed continuous casting technology of steel and the need of energy saving, a kind of castable of safety lining of tundish with low thermal conductivity and high strength was developed The castable was prepared by using high-alumina lightweight aggregate and flint clay as aggregates and using fused magnesia powder and fumed silica as bonding system.The main properties of the developed castable as follows: Al2O3 54.0%, cold modulus of rupture (CMOR) /cold crushing strength (CCS), 6.0/44.2 MPa (110 ℃ × 24 h), 12.3/75.4 MPa (1100 ℃ × 3 h),15.4/109.6 MPa (1400 ℃ × 3 h), thermal conductivity,0.55 W·m-1·K-1 (500 ℃), 0.67 W·m-1·K-1 (850 ℃),0.73 W·m-1·K-1 (1050 ℃).The thermal conductivity of the developed castable reduced 39% compared with the conventional high alumina based castable for safety lining of tundish.
