With the development of clean steel and ultra-low carbon steel, combined with the requirements of environmental protection, carbon containing refractories toward low or ultra-low carbonization is the direction of development in refractory field.In order to improve thermal shock stability of low carbon Al2O3-C refractory, we choose three pitches (environmental friendly pitch, mesophase pitch and high-temperature asphalt) to investigate the influence of structure and performance on catalytic modified Al2O3-C refractories and to discuss the influence of asphalt on carbon fiber.The results show that:compared with the high temperature asphalt environmental friendly pitch and mesophase pitch are more conducive to improving cold and high modulus of rupture and thermal shock of Al2O3-C specimens and the thermal shock strength retention rate of 70%.The specimens that add pitch to low carbon Al2O3-C refractories grow into a certain amount of nano carbon fibrous with the help of catalyst.Environmental friendly pitch and mesophase pitch can help to generate much more and long fiber, which can fill part of porosity and make for compact structure.While high-temperature asphalt generates less and short fiber, therefore the filling effect is not obvious and come into being loose structure.
