ZrB2-Al2O3 composite powders are successfully synthesized via an improved sol-gel technique combined aluminothermic reduction at low temperature.The effects of heating temperature and Zr:B molar ratio on the purity of final powder have been studied.The formation mechanism of ZrB2-Al2O3 has been investigated.The results show that ZrB2-Al2O3 composite under optimal ratio (ZB6A0)could be obtained at 1100 ℃ for 2 h and the synthesized ZrB2 with an average grain size of 30 nm.Two routes can be described the formation mechanism:one was ZrO2 and Al reacted with amorphous B which produced from intermediate reaction.The other one was one was through the intermediate formation of Al3Zr, and then reaction reacted with amorphous B2O3.
