Amounts and depth profiles of tritium in various metallic materials exposed to tritium gas at high temperatures were examined by two kinds of technique such as a conventional etching method and the -ray-induced X-ray spectrometry (BIXS). High level retention of tritium in the surface layers in comparison with bulk of the materials was clearly shown by BIXS, which was consistent with the results obtained from the chemical etching. The enriched layers were again formed by diffusion of tritium from the bulk even if those were completely removed by the chemical etching. This phenomenon was also observed clearly by the technique of BIXS. In addition, it was confirmed that a part of tritium diffused from the bulk was constantly released from the surface as a chemical form of tritiated water.
