Environmental measurements, based on regulations or driven by the proximity of industrialrnplants and population, frequently require the continuous monitoring of water. The objective ofrnthe monitoring of chemical contamination is to ensure suitable water quality. When thernconcentration of contaminants can change rapidly, on-line monitoring is desirable. Thernchallenging task for on-line monitoring of constituents in water is the continuous determinationrnof selected pollutants at very low concentration levels. This is especially difficult when the waterrnmatrix is subject to environmental changes such as widely varying particulate loading andrnconsequently makes the measurement task often unsuitable for simple analytical techniques. Thernreliability and long term stability of the system solution requires suitable filtration andrncontinuous extraction of the constituents from the water matrix. Furthermore selectivity andrndetectability at least in the low ppb range has to be ensured to have automatic and unattendedrnoperation over long periods of time.rnThis paper describes the task and system configuration of an analytical system utilizing processrngas chromatography that is continuously measuring more than 60 chemicals in surface water. Itrnis used to ensure fresh water supply from a major shipping channel. The paper specificallyrnoutlines the operational challenges encountered such as automatic cleaning of filtering andrnextraction device, maintenance issues and experiences gained during operation over a period ofrnseveral years resulting in continuous operation despite the challenges of the variety ofrncomponents, the specific water matrix conditions and the location.
