Assessment of Mode Ⅱ Fracture Tests for Fiber Reinforced Composite Laminates

Three basic mode-Ⅱ test methods ENF, JIS and ASTM-Draft are assessedrnusing same material system (AS4/8552 carbon/epoxy unidirectional compositernlaminate). Modified JIS method that uses a PTFE film coated stainless steel rodrninstead of PTFE strip was also proposed and assessed. The ASTM-Draft testrnmethod is more involved than other methods, because of measurement of threerncompliance values. The JIS method is not a pure mode-Ⅱ fracture test but it is arnmixed-mode Ⅰ-Ⅱ test with G_Ⅰ of the order of about 20 to 50 J/m2. Therefore, G_(Ⅱc)rnmeasured by JIS or modified JIS is always less than pure mode-Ⅱ fracturerntoughness value. The ASTM NPC G_(Ⅱc) is about 11% larger than G_(Ⅱc) measuredrnfrom ENF test, out of this 6% is contributed by the difference in the twornequations. Furthermore, fracture toughness of wedge or shear precrackedrnspecimens is nearly same for both ENF and ASTM-Draft test methods.
