At the turn of the last decade (1980s) Nestle senior managementnrecognised that global competition was increasing with many newncontenders entering the market. Regulations, particularly in Europe werenchanging and the economic performance of many countries would continuento be uncertain. Our principle customers were becoming more demandingnand developing their own global and regional strategies. Respondingnsuccessfully to these pressures demanded new strategies and providing antechnology framework as an enabler for business transformation was onenof the key components. Integrated operations requires synchronisednbusiness and manufacturing which needs to leverage investments inn`office' technologies and sharing common standards for messagentransactions, master data, bar code, ticketing and scanning. ANAnstandards, EDI and integration technologies are the glue which now bindsncustomers and suppliers together; achieving this same glue in productionnoperations will help bring about a new vision of manufacturing. The nextngeneration of manufacturing enterprises and their supporting informationnsystems will be very different from the legacies of the past. Nestle UKnis quickly learning how to achieve business benefits through the use ofna new and modern business information system, its installed computernnetwork infrastructure and integration of business and operationalnprocesses.
