In 2003 the UK government announced its aspirationrnto reduce CO2 emissions by 60% by 2050 relative torn1990 levels. To achieve this, action is required tornradically reduce energy demand and increase thernsupply of energy from renewable or energy efficientrnsources. Focusing on the domestic sector,rntechnologies such as fuel cells, Stirling and internalrncombustion engine micro-CHP and heat pumps arernoften cited as one means of reducing carbonrnemissions. However there is much uncertainty as tornthe potential environmental benefits (if any) of theserntechnologies when set against a changing energyrnsupply picture. In this paper the performance of thernfour different technologies is analysed usingrnsimulation with a view to determining the minimumrnthermodynamic performance criteria that they mustrnattain if they are to have any environmental andrnconsequently economic advantages overrnconventional domestic energy supplies.
