The altimeter significant wave height (SWH) and thernsurface wind speed measurements are of considerablernimportance for weather prediction either for assimilationrnor verification. The ESA CryoSat-2 Fast DeliveryrnOcean Level 2 (FDM) is not an exception and thereforernvalidation of this product is required. However, due tornthe delay in releasing the official FDM product, a “similar”rnproduct produced by Centre National d'Etudes Spatialesrn(CNES) is used here. Despite its underestimation,rnthe SWH from this product is in good agreement withrnthe in-situ measurements and ECMWF wave modelrnpredictions. The agreement for the product is slightlyrnbetter than the ENVISAT RA-2 counterpart for SWHrnvalues below ~ 2.0 m and vice versa for SWH valuesrnabove ~4.0 m with an overall advantage for the CryoSatrnproduct. The CryoSat-2 SWH parameter of the CNESrnproduct was found to be stable over the whole data setrn(a period of more than two months). The unavailabilityrnof SWH product around Europe may limit the impact ofrnassimilating the FDM product into wave model aroundrnthat region.
