We constructed a three-dimensional geologic model of Yucca Mountain to serve as a baseline interpretation of the subsurface geology of the site of the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository.The model is an interpretive synthesis of available geologic and geophysical data representing 51 rock layers and 42 faults from the topographic surface to a depth of 2740 meters (9000 feet) below sea level.The model shows a complex network of intersecting faults and laterally variable stratigraphic thicknesses.We use interactive three-dimensional computer displays,virtual reality,and traditional paper graphics to communicate this model to scientists as well as others.
