Yucca Mountain,Nevada,has been investigated from the ground surface with mapping and boreholes,and in the underground along the 7.9-km-long tunnel that is the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) (fig.1).Many surface and underground-based investigations are focused on rocks of the 12.8 Ma~1 Topopah Spring Tuff(table 1) because these are the host rocks of the potential nuclear waste repository (R.W. Elayer,TRW Environmental Safety Systems,Inc.,written commun.,1997).The thickest part of the Topopah Spring Tuff(Tpt) straddles the potential repository area,which includes most of the ESF,and thins abruptly to the north and more gradually to the south (fig.1).The formation is divided into a hierarchy of informal lithostratigraphic units that consist of members,zones,and subzones~2.Some of the principal units in the crystallized part of the tuff are the lithophysal and nonlithophysal zones~2.These zones,and the included subzones,have different lithologic and fracture characteristics~2 (D.S.Sweetkind,U.S.Geological Survey (USGS),WRITTEN COMMUN., 1997),different characteristic signatures on geophysical logs~3,4,and different hydrogeologic~5,6 and thermal-mechanical properties (D.S.Kessel,TRW Environmental Safety Systems,Inc., written commun., 1997).Thus the formation and distribution of lithophysal and nonlithophysal zones provide a fundamental context for may hydrogeologic and thermal-mechanical tests and process models.
