Nowadays, low resolution angular sensors mounted onrnSADMs and APMs are more often potentiometers.rnInformation is supplied through a voltage proportionalrnto the measured angle. Because of its design, suchrndevice includes rubbing contacts and has a dead zonernfor which no voltage is transferred.rnIn order to remedy to these imperfections,rnCODECHAMP and CNES develop a contactless lowrnresolution angular sensor, including an electricrnredundancy. This type of encoder can be easilyrnintegrated into various telecommunication platforms.rnThe final encoder output can be:rn- a whole analog ramp over 360°;rn- or whole analog ramp over 180° with arnposition identification signal over half revolution ;rn- or a digital information.rnIt will have an accuracy of +/- 0.5% and a resolutionrnfrom 10 to 12bits. The power supply voltage will bern5V±5% and the consumption will not exceed 30mA.rnFirst, the principle of electro-optical signals modulatedrnby a polarimetric device was selected. A firstrnbreadboard has confirmed the encoder feasibility.rnSecond, the concept was adapted to the wavelength ofrnthe infrared LEDs and a digital calculation was chosenrnfor the signal processing. A second breadboardrnincluding the representative electro-optical componentsrnwas used as baseline for the assessment of accuracyrnbeginning of life and of sensitivity to the thermal andrnradiation environments.rnThird, an on-going research including an electroopticalrnmodel of the sensor will allow to manufacturernspecific photoreceptors and ASIC. After this, arnvalidation engineering model will be performed.rnThe works carried out in the frame of this project havernled to a registration of CODECHAMP-CNES inventionrnpatent on May 2010. The achievement of this projectrnwill be a potentiometer type sensor without dead zonernand particularly robust to geometrical defaults.
