The space telescopes Herschel and James Webb, thernsuccessor of the Hubble Telescope, are designed tornoperate primarily in the infrared range of thernelectromagnetic spectrum. Therefore therninstrumentation has to be cooled to cryogenicrntemperatures. The instrument PACS (PhotodetectorrnArray Camera & Spectrometer) is located on Herschel,rnwhich was launched in May 2009. It is operating atrnsuperfluid helium temperatures below 2 Kelvin. Therninstruments MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) andrnNIRSpec (Near Infrared Spectrograph) on James Webb,rnwith launch planned for 2014 will operate belowrn15 Kelvin (MIRI) and at 38 Kelvin (NIRSpec).rnTo actuate the different filter and grating wheelsrnintegrated in these experiments two types of cryogenicrnmotors are used. These electronically commutatedrntorque motors were especially developed for the use inrnlow temperature and vacuum environment and yieldrnlarge torques, large range of speeds, and are furtherrncharacterized by low outgassing, high efficiency, smallrnthermal losses and high positioning accuracy. Theyrnwere designed, produced and tested according to ESArnSpace Standards at the Low Temperature Laboratoryrn(TTL) at the Free University of Berlin.
