In order to perform spectrometric measurements, thernNear Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSpec) aboard thernJames Webb Space Telescope (JWST) needs the abilityrnto select various spectral band widths and split these uprninto its comprised wavelengths. These functions arernachieved by the Filter Wheel Assembly (FWA) and thernGrating Wheel Assembly (GWA). The filters of thernFWA select a different bandwidth of the spectrum eachrnwhile the gratings on the GWA yield specific diffractiverncharacteristic for spectral segmentation. A high spectralrnsensitivity as well as the ability to detect the spectra ofrnvarious objects at the same time result in highrnrequirements regarding the positioning accuracy of thernoptics of both mechanisms in order to link the detectedrnspectra to the 2-dimensional images of the observedrnobjects.rnThe NIRSpec mechanism including FWA and GWArnwill operate at temperature levels below 42K which arernestablished during testing inside of a cryostat. Howeverrnthe alignment and testing of these mechanisms requiresrna lot of thought since there is very limited access to thernitem under test within such a device. Alignment needsrnto be preloaded based on simulations and testing isrnreduced to optical methods and evaluation of electricalrnsignals.rnThis paper describes the methods used for the variousrnalignment steps, the corresponding tests and theirrnprecision of measurement as well as the achievedrnaccuracies in the mechanism performance.
