Currently the implementation of building information modelling (BIM) methodology is increasing in the construction industry; BIM's qualities make it a suitable methodology to increase construction efficiency. Moreover, the industry is also making an effort in order to reach sustainable performance. In this attempt, environmental concepts are starting to be considered. Normally environmental information is not taken into account when designing; designers and engineers are not fully aware of the importance and repercussions of the environmental impacts of their construction projects. It is necessary that designers start to include environmental criteria when designing. If the aim is to obtain an environmental assessment of the construction projects, the BIM methodology could be used as the support medium, but for this purpose a new approach is required. The suggested solution, in this paper, is based on starting with a pre-selection assessment tool as a first step for considering environmental criteria while designing. The environmental information will be included in the BIM platform, among the objects' properties, with the aim of enabling designers to have a direct access to this information while deciding.
