Several twinning projects constructed in the early 2000s in northwest Alberta were identified by AlbertarnTransportation (AT) to exhibit premature roughness characterized by heaving of the pavement surface atrnlow temperature transverse crack locations. AT and EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd. carried out anrninvestigation of one of these projects, Hwy 43:04, east of Grande Prairie, constructed in a stagedrnsequence: granular base course and first stage asphalt pavement in 2000 or 2001; final stage asphaltrnpavement in 2003.rnA high speed inertial profiler was used to collect profile data during the summer seasons of 2003 throughrn2008; data were also collected in the winters of 2008 and 2009. Analyses of the historical profile datarnindicated that the heaves at low temperature transverse crack locations were first evident in 2004, that theyrnprogressed in height through the years, and were the highest during winter. On a section basis, thernaverage IRI increased every year following final stage paving reaching between 1.8 and 2.5 mm/m in thernsummer of 2008 and increasing to 2.1 to 4.1 mm/m in the winter of 2009.rnThe results were used to identify preservation treatments to restore ride quality, and those treatments werernconstructed in 2009.
