Bioceramics are of increasing interest as materials in a variety of medical and dental uses. For example, ceramic materials are currently being used as key elements in hip replacement units, and ceramic materials are of great interest in tooth replacement in dentistry. However, many of both the bioinert and the bioactive ceramics are currently utilized by being coated upon or being attached to various metallic or polymeric materials. Such metallic and polymeric materials can have deleterious long-term medical effects. However, joining bioceramics opens the possibility of utilizing ceramics without the need to include either metallic or polymeric materials. In this study, a bioactive material (hydroxyapatite) is joined to a mica-platelet-reinforced glass ceramic. In addition, to facilitate the design of geometrically complex bioceramic components, internal channels were fabricated (without machining) for a variety of bioinert and bioactive materials.
