Experimental and Analytical Programs Investigating Cooling of a Continuous Mass of Relocated Debris

The coolability of a continuous mass of primarily ceramic debris after relocation from the core to a lower plenum filled with water is being investigated. Because of the potential impact that improved debris cooling models may have on severe accident analyses, the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and other research organizations have proposed analytical and experimental programs to address debris coolability questions. Stress and thermal analysis results from INEL scoping calculations are summarized in this paper. Insights gained from these calculations related to debris coolability test material composition, decay heat, debris heat flux, and pressure are used to compare debris coolability research programs proposed by various organizations.
