The NRC's research program in probabilistic risk analysis consists of a set of closely-related elements, from basic research to regulatory applications. Specifically, the research program includes the following elements:rn1. Development and demonstration of improved methods, advanced PR A models, and computer tools;rn2. Reviews of risk assessments such as the IPEs and IPEEEs; andrn3. Technical support to other agency staff, including development of guidance on regulatory uses of PRA in regulation.rnThis paper provides a brief overview of each element; it then focuses on the specific activity involving development of guidance for use of PRA in reactor regulation.
