Hair root cells actively divide in a hair follicle, and theyrnsensitively reflect physical conditions. By analyzing thernhuman hair, we can know stress levels on the humanrnbody and metabolic conditions caused by microgravityrnenvironment and cosmic radiation. The Japan AerospacernExploration Agency (JAXA) has initiated a humanrnresearch study to investigate the effects of long-termrnspace flight on gene expression and mineral metabolismrnby analyzing hair samples of astronauts who stayed inrnthe International Space Station (ISS) for 6 months.rnDuring long-term flights, the physiological effects onrnastronauts include muscle atrophy and bone calcium loss.rnFurthermore, radiation and psychological effects arernimportant issue to consider. Therefore, an understandingrnof the effects of the space environment is important forrndeveloping countermeasures against the effectsrnexperienced by astronauts.rnIn this experiment, we identify functionally importantrntarget proteins that integrate transcriptome, mineralrnmetabolism and proteome profiles from human hair. Torncompare the protein expression data with the genernexpression data from hair roots, we developed the proteinrnprocessing method. We extracted the protein from fivernstrands of hair using ISOGEN reagents. Then, thesernextracted proteins were analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Theserncollected profiles will give us useful physiologicalrninformation to examine the effect of space flight.
